Introduction to Genre Theory- Link to Short Films
A genre is a kind of way to sort and categorize short films, and all films are separated and sorted into sub-genres and hybrid genres in the film industry. A sub-genre is a film that is made up of 2 combined genres, for example romance and comedy; rom-com, a sub-genre of a horror film would be a slasher horror. The word hybrid means mixture of fusion therefore this would mean there would be three or more genres mixed together in order to make the film, for example, Avatar is a mix of Sci-Fi, Family, Horror and romance all in one. In order to make the genre of a film, all the conventions of a short film would have to be considered and examples of these are, budget, location, characters and narrative.
Theorist 1- Steve Neale
Steve Neale states that 'genres are instances of repetition and differences'. Neal explains that he believes that genre is defined by stereotypes and conventions included in the media industry. As well as this, he states that a sub-genre is only designated through how much is subverts to the main genre of the film.
Theorist 2- Barry Keith Grant
Grant argues that sub-genres are used as more specific categories which then allow audiences to empathize and identify with them, by using familiar and some what recognizable characteristics.
