Non-Diegetic Sound
There are different types of sound that are used in short films, for example there is non-diegetic and diegetic sound. Non-diegetic sound is when the sound is not present in the action nor visible on the screen, for example a soundtrack, this is not seen by the actors but adds to the emotion and atmosphere of what is going on at this specific time in the short film. Examples of this would be the soundtrack that is added over the top as well as a voice over.

Diegetic Sound
Diegetic sound is when the actors are able to hear this sound, and is sound that is present in the occurring action of the short film.
Foley
Another example of a type of sound that is used within a film is a 'Foley'. A foley is a reproduction of a normal, everyday sound in order to emphasise the audio quality. An example of this would be elements such as footsteps, glass smashing and doors closing in the film.
Dialogue
Dialogue is very important within a drama film, as it really connotes the feelings and emotions of the characters that are speaking. As well as this there is an element called a voice over. The significance of a voice over in a short film help the audience to connect with a certain character as well as build up the characters persona and their emotions. The voice over helps with the dramatic transfer to the audience watching it. As well as creating a connection with the character, it gives the audience watching an insight to what is happening in this specific character's life, which may include knowing more than other characters on screen.
Another form of dialogue there is that can be used within a drama is 'Direct Address'. This is a very rarely used form of dialogue which when a character speaks directly to the audience. This can act as a narrative device in order to reveal more information about the plot and narrative while the acting is happening.
